1.4034 is characterised by its high hardenability in conjunction with good corrosion resistance in moderately corrosive environments. Due to its higher carbon content, it is more hardenable than 1.4031. It is used in the quenched and tempered condition and due to its high hardness, is ideally suited for the production of cutting tools and the production of roller bearings.

X46Cr13 is a basic steel without molybdenum, nitrogen or vanadium. It can be outperformed (typically at a higher cost) by more advanced steels like N680 with similar carbon content.

Welding

Due to the high carbon content, 1.4034 is not suitable for welding. If welding cannot be avoided, preheat to 350 °C-400 °C and post heat treatment temperature is about 650 °C.

X46Cr13 has good workability when hot, and potential to reach high hardness of up to 56 HRC. It contains a moderately high carbon ratio of approximately 0.46% which gives it a good compromise between high hardness and corrosion resistance for many applications. It is also relatively inexpensive to produce.

Corrosion Resistance

(PREN = 12,5-14,5)

DIN EN 1.4034 is not resistant to intergranular corrosion upon delivery. It has good corrosion resistance in non-chloride and acid-base environments; polished surface under tempered condition have good corrosion resistance; in order to maintain good corrosion resistance, it is not recommended to be used in annealed or high temperature conditions.

Use & Application

Hardened steel for cutting tools, table knives, machine knives, razors, scissors and measuring tools, ball bearings, skates, etc.
